Lower Back Pain Uncovered

In a changing society, back pain has affected more and more people. National records suggest that 80% of people will experience some form of back pain during their life. In most cases, back pain is associated with pain and stiffness in the lower back area.

Due to a shift in working habits, which is finding more and more people desk bound or in repetitive strain environments lower back pain is the leading cause of long-term work related absence.

Generally lower back pain is classified by medical practitioners in one of two ways:

  • Specific back pain- the pain experienced is directly related to a specific health condition or traumatic incident
  • Non-specific back pain- does not involve the above concerns and can be caused by joint sprains, muscle strains, minor injuries or an irritated nerve

The type of back pain experienced is also classified into two groups depending on the length of time that the pain has been experienced. Those classifications are:

  • Acute- the pain does not last longer than 6 weeks
  • Chronic- the pain lasts longer than 6 weeks

Episodes of back pain will differ from individual to individual. In fact the pain experienced by the individual themselves will differ from time to time. Some people have minor episodes of acute back pain before making a recovery and others will experience mild to moderate pain that will be interrupted by severe periods of pain.

One study of people who visited a health practitioner for back pain reported that:

  • 40% of people were pain free within 6 weeks
  • 58% of people were pain free within 12 weeks
  • 73% of people were pain free within one year

Determining the outlook for a patient’s back pain will vary considerably, depending on the individual’s lifestyle needs and goals. Areas such as fitness, lifestyle, health concerns and psychological factors will all play a vital role.

Due to the longevity of chronic back pain the outlook for recovery will consider the role of social and psychological factors in more depth. It has been found that people with positive outlooks report having a good quality of life and make faster recoveries when compared to those that are depressed or unhappy with one or more aspects of their life.

When dealing with back pain it is always recommended to seek medical advice sooner than later to avoid any physical or psychological factors that may lead to increased pain or chronic pain.
